Viking Tent Frame

 The Summer of Tent Construction!

This is the beginning of my 48 hour tent frame buildathon! By Thursday, this will be a fully constructed 10x15 Oseberg A-frame tent. The tent itself is from Midwest Tents and is of high quality, but needs some tweaking for my purposes. It will see its first event, and likely only event of 2020, at Kelley Castle in Tomahawk, WI this weekend.

If I can get it done, that is!

The frame itself is complete!

The lateral and ridge beams are 8' a piece and when connected with the sleeve, stretch 16' long. The front and back boards are 12'. The last 6" of each lateral beam is cut down and rounded to a 1.5" peg which will slot into the holes at the front and back of the tent.

Only one thing left to do now... see if it fits together! 😬

Well the buildathon is over! There's good news and bad news. The good news: Everything fits together! The boards line up perfectly and I think it will be a sturdy structure. The bad news: Due to the sheer size, this thing takes several people to set up. Not realizing that, I tried to do it with only my partner's help yesterday and the frame fell over. I split two boards and damaged a sleeve. Today I made the necessary repairs (right at 48 hours, too!), but it looks like I'm just going to have to chance it and set it up at the event where I will have more sets of hands. Here's hoping it works out! Here's a shot of the frame connected together, just before we (disastrously) tried to stand up the ridge pole. This is a big boi, and putting the frame up is a real task-- you might say its pretty "in-tents"! 😜
